Chabad in Hebron has a very special tradition concerning Lag BaOmer. In the early 1900s, the Rebbe Rashab – the fifth Chabad Rabbi, Shalom DovBer Shneerson – requested to sponsor the lighting of the main bonfire in celebration of Lag BaOmer. The move is considered important and highly significant given that the primary place of celebration is farther North, in Meron, where the star of the day, Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai, is buried. Lag BaOmer marks the Rashbi’s day of passing, which he directed all generations to come to celebrate with great joy. In honor of the Rebbe Rashab’s wishes, Chabad of Hebron is honored every year to sponsor the community bonfire lighting on top of Tel Rumeida over looking Me’arat HaMachpela. The evening begins with a torch bearing traditional Lag Baomer parade from the Tomb of the Patriarchs up to the bonfire site. Please join us if you will be in town. And even if you can’t be with us physically, be part of the spirit and tradition by helping us sponsor this event. Donate today and assure your part in this great soulful celebration.
