They may wear the same colored uniform as the boys and learn the same skills as the boys - but the girls soldiers are unquestionably… girls!
Hevron Shluchos Batsheva Cohen and Michal Nachshon made two Shavuos events so that the girl soldiers on different shifts would all get their chance to participate.
For years Batsheva has been visiting the army bases on Erev Shabbos to bring Shabbos candles and Shabbos treats to the girl soldiers. They feel special when they are being singled out for their special Mitzvah.
For the last few years Batsheva has visited the bases midweek to give Torah study classes to the girls. They feel comfortable asking about Torah, the role of the woman in a Jewish home and their questions about Hevron. Without these opportunities with Batsheva, such questions would go unanswered.
One of the Shavuos parties was held on base and one in the Cohen Chabad House. With all the different elements to Shavous – the Ten Commandments, King David’s birthday and Yartzeit, the story of his great-grandmother Ruth (who happens to be buried at the top of a hill, overlooking an army base in Hevron!), the culmination of Counting the Omer, and more – the soldiers played Trivia-style games with the non-trial facts about Shavuos.
With Jewish holidays comes Jewish food. The soldiers participated in preparing the traditional dairy meal for Shavuos. Yum.
Many of the girl soldiers have visited the Cohen Chabad House on other occasions as well. They love making Challah and playing with the children. They are soldiers. They are tough. They are clever… but beyond the uniform, they are… Jewish girls!
