WELCOMING A NEW SEFER TORAH TO KOLLEL MENUCHA ROCHEL

March 21, 2009

Over the past three years, Rabbi Yitzchok Kogan, together with his community in Moscow, have donated nine Torah Scrolls to combat units in the Israel Defense Forces.

On Shabbos Parshas HaChodesh Rabbi Kogan celebrated his grandson's Bar Mitzvah in Hevron. That Sunday, the 26th of Adar, February 22, Kogan and his visiting community members decided to donate a tenth Torah Scroll to Chabad of Hevron.

At the joyous celebration in Maaras HaMachpel, the final letters of the Torah Scroll were filled in by Hevron community leaders, Kogan's congregants who had come with him from Russia, soldiers who are serving in Hevron, and spontaneously, a group of visiting Members of the Knesset, including Likud members Danny Danon, and Yaron Levin, as well as National Union MK Michael Ben-Ari. Likud MK Tzipi Hotobeli was with them and was very excited to receive a piece of the cloth from the Torah Scroll cover.

The Torah Scroll was brought to the Kollel Menucha Rochel building with a military escort, singing and dancing. It was placed in the beautiful Aron Kodesh donated by Tzvi and Chana Shochet.

In keeping with his reputation for exceptional Mesirus Nefesh and Ahavas Yisroel during the dangerous era of Communism in Russia, Rabbi Kogan became known as the Tzadik from Leningrad. Times have changed, but Kogan remains a community leader with exemplary Ahavas Yisroel.
